WHS Education- ‘Evolution of the Hot Comb’

Hot, Pressing, or straightening comb, which one do you call it?

Either way, this magical device with multiple names has only one function; which is to controllably straighten and style your hair. Most might think, the ‘Hot comb’ came about in the back towns of Louisiana or some other popular southern town, known for black women with kinky, curly hair. However, this device was invented in France. The 19th century tool was huge for groundbreaking trends and individualism. Marcel Grateau was one of the first hair stylists in Paris to use the hot comb in 1872. This started a new wave of styles and expectations!

It wasn’t until the hot comb; made it to the United States in the 1900’s, did Madam CJ walker add her patented revisions. Widening the teeth with a few other modifications made the ‘hot comb’ the most popular tool amongst women of color. Although, a portion of the black community saw this more as detrimental then beneficial, the movement went on forth!

The comb helped facilitate the infamous salon method of the ‘bump n’ Curl’. A simple, yet efficient hair routine that we get to enjoy at least once a week, in our local salons. It is clear that as time has passed the ‘Hot Comb’ has revolutionized with the women it services. Different gradients and materials make this device universal to all women.

Natural hair has grown extremely popular over the past few years. This has made the demand for the ‘hot comb’ even greater. The rise and fall of the relaxer, has claimed many hair and hairline casualties, which has made the transition that much easier.

Keeping the hair manageable for the women on the go, consistently begs the question….could we live without the ‘Hot Comb’????????

Hot cocoa, Ice skating, sitting by the fire and DULL HAIR??????? Women usually are not thinking about their hair, when it comes to cold weather. However ladies, when the air begins to get dry and frigid, so does your hair. Moisture is the first thing to go, once you hit that chill, so it’s wise to prepare yourself. Sustaining healthy hair throughout the winter is extremely crucial, as it can determine your hair’s strength and weaknesses for quite some time. Unlike heat damage that can be clipped off and repaired, the cold can damage from the root; leaving the scalp dry and itchy, promote dreary hair color, and create breakable ends. Here are a few tips, to get you through these winter months.

Do not wash your hair as often in the winter time:
This may sound a little odd, but again moisture and nutrients is very important to conserve. When you wash your hair too often, especially in the winter, this can cause you to lose those needed components to keep your hair healthy. It is easier to maintain clean hair in the winter, as you’re not sweating as much. Use dry shampoo!

Vitamins and Nutrients:
Take your vitamins ladies! Be proactive in protecting your hair, skin and nails. Use shampoos with Keratin and Vitamins. This will enhance strength and moisture in your hair and helping you to reinforce health.

Use light oils to grease your scalp:

WHS Hair Awareness: “Manage that Damage”

Now that the weather is ever changing from hot to cold, dry to humid; your hair needs extensive attention and care. Women are consistently inquiring about the best products and techniques to maintain health and avoid damage. Have you looked in the mirror lately??? Split ends, thinning, breakage, and dull tresses to name a few are major signs that this article is for you! WHS has compiled a list of do’s and don’ts to “Manage that Damage”!

Do: Wash your hair at least once a week or every two; if your hair is healthy it will produce natural oils to protect itself. However, those essential oils blended with a polluted environment, sweat, hair products and related factors cause build-up. This won’t allow your scalp and hair to breath, making the hair grimy and smelly.

Don’t: Wash your hair more than once a week or wait past two weeks. Both these decision’s can result in major hair loss! Washing the hair too often, won’t allow those natural oils to produce, therefore making the hair weak and vulnerable to breakage. Taking too long to wash your hair, will cause a nasty case of build up, that can start to irritate the scalp and cause uncontrollable itching…YIKES!

Do: Let your hair air dry from time to time, this is a great way to maintain strength and hair resilience! Comb it out in different sections, braid, pin up and relax! This method is extremely recommended from time to time, to keep that heat off your hair and to prevent permanent damage to your natural volume.

Don’t: Over use heat on your hair. Flat irons and Curling irons are being used too often; causing permanent damage! Your ends are taking a major beating with all that heat. Instead look into using steam or sponge overnight rollers to create volume.

Do: Get your ends trimmed every four weeks. Not only is it healthy, but you’ll also receive shape and bounce. Your hair is going too spilt whether your want it to our not. Depending on when you take this step, depends on how much hair is cut! Keep it healthy and (believe it or not) keep it growing by losing those dead ends. Once your hair starts to split, it will continue up the shaft!!!!! It makes the difference between a hair clipping and an unwanted haircut.

Don’t: Brush and comb your hair to often. This will contribute to your split ends and make them a lot worse. If you feel your hair consistently needs a comb or brush, odds are you have split ends.

Here are brief but effective dos and don’ts to “Manage that Damage”. Healthy hair helps healthy attitudes ladies!

Spring has arrived and WHS is here to show you how to revitalize your look for the season. Weather during the Spring can be completely unpredictable, therefore making your perfect style in the morning drab and under a hat by lunch time. Hopefully after a few of these tips your hair will no longer be negatively affected by these damp dewy days!

With fashion week coming to a close :( , I thought I'd share some pictures from a Pre Fashion Week Pampering Party for editors that was held at my salon.

In the midst of a hectic snowstorm, I joined up with M2M Nail Polish to give some of NY's most respected editors a night of pampering before they hit the Bryant Park tents. The night included manicures by M2M and Wash & Style/Blow Outs courtesy of myself. With champagne and cupcakes to accompany these beauty services, this night was filled with fun, food, fashion & FABULOSITY! A growing trend in celebrity hair, visible roots leaves many asking the question, Is this style Hot or Not?!?! Recently, clients have been asking questions regarding Visible Roots, so I compiled a list of the most common questions and answered them below:

How did visible roots become trendy? In a shaky economy, highlights are a pricey luxury that many people can't afford, so most are leaving the “just left the salon” look alone and going for a more relaxed look. Not to mention, some of today’s hottest celebrities are rocking visible roots. It’s trendy, daring and on the edge, which is in right now!

Which stars are rocking visible roots? Stars like Beyonce, Jessica Simpson, Mary J. Blidge and Shakira.

Who can wear visible roots? A younger trendier woman and teenagers opposed to middle age and sophisticated women.

Who should avoid visible roots? Women who work in a corporate environment, or business setting, as visible roots can be seen as unkempt and unprofessional, rather than edgy and stylish.

On what styles and colors of hair do visible roots work best? Bob’s and choppy haircuts look great with visible roots! All colors can work with visible roots, as long as the roots don’t clash with the hair.

Do you have any tips for maintaining the visible roots look at home? Like any other style, I recommend that you keep your hair moisturized with conditioner and get treatments as often as you visit the salon.

Natural Hair Care: A Trend thats HAIR to stay!!

Transitioning from relaxed to natural hair amongst women of African descent has been a growing trend over the past few years. Though some are skeptical about taking the leap from chemically treated hair to natural, so many women are making the change. With the huge success of the movie “Good Hair”, clients have been asking me about making the transition. Check out my tips on going natural:

There are a few basic ways to make the transition to natural hair. The simplest is to just cut off the relaxed hair and live with a short hair style for several months. This is the most drastic approach ; however , it takes the least amount of work and there's no worry about breakage. I prefer two strand twists as a great transtition style, two strand twists are one of the most popular hairstyles among women with natural hair. They are easy to do, look good on everyone, and they can be the basis for many different styles with slight variations. You can easily do two strand twists (aka double strand twists, twists, or twisties) on your own natural hair. They can be done on short hair or long hair; you only need about one inch of hair to wear two strand twists.

There are tons of products on the market for natural hair, but my top choice is by Mizani's Coconut Souffle.

Winter Hair Care Tips

It’s that time of year again… time to trade in the shorts and sundresses for sweaters and scarves. With winter, comes cold temperatures and low humidity, leaving our hair in a fragile state, meaning it’s also time to trade in our summer hair care routine for a routine that will keep your hair healthy and strong no matter what winter may bring. Here are my "Winter Hair Care Tips":

1.Conditioning: During the dry winter months, there is little moisture in the air and the hair and scalp tend to dry out more easily. After every shampoo, put a deep conditioner in your hair and leave it in for a minimum of 3-5 minutes. One of Patrick’s personal favorites is “Super Reconstructer by KeraCare” , it repairs dry, damaged , brittle hair and volumizes hair while producing a soft, silky texture.

2. Roller Setting: If you have medium to long length hair, instead of using a flat or curling iron, set your hair with rollers. The heat from any hair appliance , if used on a consistent basis will leave your hair dry and brittle and more likely to break off and damage.

3. Silk or Satin Scarf: For any length hair, be sure to tie your hair down at night with a silk or satin scarf. It will help the hair retain its moisture during the night hours. Also, instead of a wool scarf for outside, be sure to stick to satin or silk. Wool and cotton both have the tendency to snap your hair.

4. Aestalance Lustre Spray: We swear by the Aestalance brand and the "Lustre Spray" product. During the winter months, using this product daily will your hair looking healthy, shiny and full of life.

Follow these four simple steps and you'll 'spring' out of winter, with beautiful and healthy hair.

Hair Fact and Fiction

Greetings,

I'm posting this blog entry based on questions I've been receiving in the salon in reference to hair care, maintenance, products, etc. Here it goes...

Fact: You can repair split ends.
There is a way to temporarily treat split ends. We suggest Jane Carter Solution's Hair Nourishing Serum which had fortifying conditioning properties that will treat but not fully eliminate split ends. The only way to fully eradicate the problem is by completely cutting those split ends right off.

Fiction: "Greasing" the scalp promotes growth.
Grease and heavy oils clog the pores and stunts their growth. Instead you should use light oils.

Fact: Braiding your hair too tight will cause damage.
The misconception is that braids are helpful but they do more damage to the hair than help the hair. They place a strain on the strands. Braids aren't a bad idea if you allow your hair to rest at least four months out of a year.

Fiction: Relaxers make your hair grow.
It's all an optical illusion. It may look like your hair has grown after you relax it, but, that's exactly what it is: relaxed. If you straighten a slinky, it will look extremely longer. Hair growth truly is the result of a well-balanced diet and maintenance.

Fact: Washing your hair will not dry out your hair.
This actually depends on the person and how much oil their scalp naturally produces. But, for the most part, water is exactly what your scalp needs. It's the shampoo and the products used to moisturize that make all the difference. We suggest ÆSTELANCE Hydrate Leave-In Conditioner

Fiction: Cutting your hair promotes hair growth.
I think we sometimes forget that our hair grows from the scalp. Nothing I/We do to the ends will effect what's going on from the roots. I do, however, suggest getting a trim every 6-8 weeks depending on your personal hair growth to prevent split ends. Those split ends could possibly move up the shaft, creating more damage.

I hope this helps some of you who may not have known which were fact and which were fiction.

For The Hair Recessionistas

No one needs to reminds us that we're in a recession. For some, hair maintenance has become a luxury when it was formerly a necessity. We understand. This entry is dedicated to the ladies who may feel the pains of the recession but still want to "mane-tain." Here are a few tips that will keep your hair style in between visits to the salon.

One of the key factors to "mane-taining" is preserving moisture. When you wrap your hair at night, use a silk scarf. This is less abrasive as opposed to cotton scarves. Also, use Jane Carter's Nourish and Shine which adds moisture as well as provides a light sheen.

If you keep your hair curly, pin-curl your hair at night to sustain the curl into the next day.

If you have highlights, new growth becomes obvious after a few weeks. You can fix this by using tracks as highlights. This protects the hair from chemicals as well as eliminates the "new growth" problem.

Some treatments, like scheduled trims and relaxers, are irreplaceable but we're here to help you in between visits.

On Monday, March 16th, beauty editors, members of the media and VIP clients gathered at the Wellington Hair Spa in Chelsea to celebrate owner and founder Patrick Wellington’s 25th anniversary in the hair care industry. Nearly 100 guests came out to support Patrick, a testament to his vast network of industry veterans, media professionals and friends.

The event was hosted by leading hair care brand Mizani and hosted by Stacie J., the former “Apprentice” contestant and creator of Golden by Stacie J. fragrance. Guests enjoyed a full spread of hors d’oeuvres by Chef Jesse Cuisine and a wine tasting by Long Island winery Bouké. Other event sponsors included Sphatika and Jane Carter Solutions.
